Highlights of the Region 10 Meeting March 26, 2006
By Laura Mickelson
Delegates in attendance: Laura Mickelson, Larry Hoffman,
Lori Conway
Excused: Jill Frieders, Ann Benson, Toni Marie O’Daniel,
Anita Grant (alternate)
It is very unusual for us to have so few delegates at the meeting, as we all know, life happens! It does point out the need for us to have additional alternates. What I propose is that the Board appoint a group of alternates including the President, if not already a delegate or alternate, that would supplement the elected delegates and alternates. Since alternates are on the mailing list, they would be in the loop in case they needed to step in. This also makes it much easier to replace a delegate at the convention since anyone on the approved list can move up to a delegate without additional paperwork or signatures.
Region 10 has assets of $54,579.85.
Dean’s Director’s Report is available on the Region 10 website and contains a lot of information, but following are some items of interest:
Executive search. It is anticipated that this will completed and a new person ‘in place’ by July.
Sweepstakes: The money taken in so far (cash available for distribution for the 2006 show year) is up 30% from last year and over the amount projected by the Commission which should mean that the dollar per point figure should be close to the projected $9-$10. Additional point money should come is as the show season gets going all over the country. Web sign up should be available soon. Shows that did not use the right IABS numbers for their classes but have the right classes will be helped by AHA staff to get the points for exhibitors so if you see a premium that doesn’t appear to have the right classes, don’t assume that points money will not be available. Have the show manager contact Summer Van Velkenberg at AHA and they may be able to fix this. An example of this is the Rice Lake show and they are going to work with AHA to get this fixed. Currently they do not have any IABS classes listed.
Youth Nationals: In Albuquerque for 2007 and 2008. Working on a contract for 2009-2011.
Region 10 Show premium is at the printer’s and should be out soon. The 2007 show will be held in Minnesota June 13-17. Concern was expressed about the negative impact on WAHA and WDHA on not having the show in Wisconsin but at this time there really isn’t a viable alternative.
Region 10 Sport Horse show will add over fences this year. Some of the regional classes will be on Saturday so Sunday should be less hectic. Concern was expressed about the lack of qualifying opportunities in Minnesota. We should consider adding at least some basic classes to the spring show for 2007.
Region 10 Youth Round Up premium is out and the show will be in Winona on May 13-14. They need sponsorships.
Region 10 Youth Director report was given by Britta Hegge. They are changing the format for the convention with short sessions scattered throughout the week rather than a 2-day intensive convention. Britta’s term expires in July (at the youth convention). The new Youth Director is Adam Rickart from MHAHA with the Sydney Arnold from WAHA being vice-director.
Region 10 is sponsoring an open shows high point program for 2006. I will pass along the details when I get them. I agree to market this along with our championships.
Elections for Region 10 Officers (terms start at end of AHA Convention
in November) were held with following elected:
Director: Dean Meier
Vice Director: Laura Mickelson
Secretary: Jackie Johnson
Treasurer:
Kathy Monico
It was decided to change the Gelding award to the Ambassador Award so that clubs have more options in awarding this. This is an award that Region 10 pays for and provides to each club with the club deciding the criteria for awarding it. We have not taken advantage of this for many years and perhaps we should. I suggest we add this to the April agenda. This is awarded when and where the club decides.
Another award that Region 10 provides is the President’s Award. The president of each club decides who gets it (and the criteria). Deadline to get name of person who gets award to Kathy Monico is 4/15. This award can be presented at the Region 10 show.
Region 10 will sponsor two resolutions. The first will propose changing the current 90-day conflict of interest rules to 30 days. The second will propose changing the conflict of interest rule as they relate to panel of judges. Currently, if you have a conflict with any judge on any paned, you cannot show at all even if you are not showing under that panel. For example, you have a conflict with one of the hunter panel judges; you cannot show a horse in working western. If we want to put forth any resolutions, we need to decide this at our next meeting.
Next Region 10 meeting is November 5, 2006.
