President’s Report

No Report

Minutes

Anita Grant motioned to approve the two sets of minutes from April 4, 2009.  Hillary Hoffman seconded the motion.  Motion approved.

Treasurer’s Report

Jill Frieders reported that Spring Fling is currently showing a profit of approximately $5,400.  There are outstanding invoices so the final amount will be somewhat less.

Spring Fling

The Board discussed the Spring Fling show dates for 2010.  USEF has the dates listed as April 2 through the 4th of 2010.  The contract for the facility is for March 26-28.  Ann and Teresa will inform USEF of the correct dates (March 26-28).

The Board discussed the “going green” effort.  Although Ann and Teresa said they received a couple of complaints but most people were “ok” having to download the premium book.  The Board agreed that we would continue this practice.

Patrons and Sponsorships for the Open Show

The Board discussed the problem of sponsorships and patronships for the shows.  The Board is aware that the same individuals are asked time and time again.  Lori Conway recommended that we seek out a volunteer to take over the role of securing corporate sponsorships, similar to what Brian Feuling had done in previous years.  Anita Grant recommended that each board member try to get a sponsorship or two for events.

MN Horse Expo

Anita Grant reported that Katie O’Shea would like to assume the leadership for the MN Horse Expo.  Anita shared some of the ideas she and Katie discussed.  They would like to have all the Expo volunteers submit a picture and a short paragraph that describes their involvement with Arabian horses.  These would then be turned into posters that could be hung at the stall areas.  They would also like have a MAHA picture book.  The book would contain photos submitted by MAHA members.  They also thought that they could pull together a book that listed lesson facilities, discovery farms, etc.  They would also like to create a two stall tent area and would put show items in there for the visitors to see and touch.

Hillary recommended that MAHA buy some stall guards so that the horses could hang their heads out to greet the visitors.  The Board recommended that we would buy a TV with a DVD player to use at the events.

Anita Grant noted that LeWayne Strand should be thanked for all his work at the Expo.  Anita will write up a short summary of the Expo for the MAHA Express and will make sure to thank him in that write up.

The Board discussed the need to set criteria for the horses that represent MAHA in the parade of breeds.  The Board wants to make sure that all horses are well broke and are comfortable with large crowds.

Website/Express/Facebook

Roberta Lembke reported on the website/express.  She would like to have each board member have a short bio on the website.  At some point Roberta will be asking Board members to submit their information.  Roberta reminded everyone that they really need to go through the website to help cull old information or think of new information that should be written and posted.

Youth

The Board agreed that all MAHA Youth members who attend convention must be 13 years of age or older and will be required to write a short summary report.  The report is a requirement for getting reimbursed.   Hillary will write up an article for the Express on why the youth should get involved in AHA Youth.

Event and Activity Promotion

Lori Conway noted that MAHA needs to do a better job of getting our events and activities listed in other publications.  She asked for a volunteer to get our events into various publications.  Jill Frieders will make a good faith effort to get this done.

MAHA Youth

The Board discussed sponsoring classes at the youth show.  MAHA will provide $250 in sponsorship money.

Trail Ride

Pat Swenson has submitted an article for the Express.  Pat reported that she found out that AHA is looking for folks to help sponsor Region trail rides.

Fall Classic Show

Lori Conway is working on the AHA forms.  Lori discovered that AHA doesn’t have the Fall Classic on their website and she will work to get this corrected.  Lori is researching options for a judge.  As a possible fun class Lori is considering having a wheelbarrow race.

MAHA Banquet

The banquet is scheduled or November 14th at the Chart House in Lakeville.

New Business

MN Renaissance Festival

The MN Renaissance Festival is looking for Arabian horses to participate.  Hillary Hoffman reported that the horses need to be incredibly broke as they need to work around elephants, snakes, belly dancers, etc.  The horses would participate in two demonstrations where an announcer would talk about the Arabian horse.  Native costumes would be required.  Board members were asked to check with members about this.

Goodhue County 4H Horse Project

The Goodhue County 4H horse project has requested a $100 donation from MAHA.  MAHA has long donated to this group.  The Board agreed to donate the funds.  The Board did discuss that we may not always be able to donate to this group if other groups start requesting funding.  MAHA simply cannot donate to every horse related organization.

Promotion Committee

The Board discussed the possible formation of a promotion committee.  We agreed that we don’t need a promotion committee.  Jill can use Quickbooks to prepare donation reports so the board can keep track of our donations.

Clinics/Seminars

The Board discussed the need to have more clinics and activities to keep MAHA interesting for our members and to attract new members.
