Former member leaves portion of her estate to benefit MAHA youth

Former long-time Minnesota Arabian Horse Association member Marilyn “Mickey” Hay (Verploeg) left a portion of her estate to MAHA to be used for the furtherance of building up youth memberships and activities.

Mickey and her husband, John, owned and operated Woodwinds Farm in Maple Plain, Minnesota and specialized in raising and showing Arabian horses, particularly the Egyptian Arabian. She was a long-time member of MAHA, The Arabian Pyramid Society and was a founding member of the Minnesota Arabian Breeders Horse Association.

“Mickey and John were very involved within the club and Chaired the MAHA show when it was one of the largest shows in the country,” said Laura Mickelson, Board Member and long-time MAHA member. “

Mickey and John owned 191 horses and bred 177 from 1958-1991 and were known for breeding some of the finest Egyptian Arabian horses in the industry, including Micajah (Gabbar by Fay-El-Dine x Galla by Galimar)

“He was one of my all-time favorites with his gorgeous dark chestnut coat with orangeish mane. I saw Mickey show him successfully in saddle seat and halter. His offspring are still breeding into at least the 3rd generation,” Laura said.

According to the MAHA President, Christy Caspers, the board is considering how best to honor her requests and anticipates rolling out programs this year.
